How To Measure Ring Size Without Your Partner Knowing

You want to surprise the person who is the love of your life by proposing on a special occasion. You have chosen the diamond, setting, and type of precious metal for the band. So, the only thing you need to have a beautiful engagement ring in hand for the occasion is her ring size. Oops! This is a more common dilemma than you might think and, lucky for you, we can offer a few suggestions.

Engagement Ring Facts

The most common size of a woman’s engagement ring is 6.5. The fit of the ring gets tighter the wider the band is. So, if you “borrowed” one of her rings for comparison, try to get one with a band width similar to the engagement ring.

Getting Ring Size Measurements without Her Knowing

If you want your proposal and ring to be a surprise you need to be subtle or even sneaky. If she has several rings that she wears for various occasions but not every day, borrow one or more for a trip to ID Jewelry at 15 W 47th St #305 a three-minute walk from Rockefeller Center in New York City. We will get a ring measurement that will be correct or at least close enough for her to slip it on her finger when you propose.

Enlisting Friends to Find Out Her Ring Size

If you cannot get your hands on one of her rings, ask one of her friends to help. However, make certain you choose someone who can be discrete because all too often the friend will pass on this important piece of information to another friend. Eventually, the news will get back to the love of your life who may be upset that the whole world seemed to know about her engagement before she did!

Trace a Ring on a Piece of Paper

If you can get your hands on one or more of her rings, trace around the inside and outside on a piece of paper using a sharpened pencil. It is a good idea to do this two or three times to make sure you are getting it right and an even better idea to do it with more than one ring. At ID Jewelry we can usually get an accurate size of engagement rings and wedding bands using this method.

If Your Ring Size Guess Was Wrong

If you guessed by comparing your pinky finger to her ring finger and were off by one or even two sizes we can resize the ring. It will take up to two weeks. And, if you want to avoid this dilemma, you can simply ask your partner for their ring size and take your chances!
